Firstly, great to see a presentation about how social media can / might help in attracting “passive” candidates. Our business is very much involved in this area – we source candidates only through referral networks (and reward the network participants generously).
It may well have been that during the live presentation you explained your thinking more fully (of course the slideshow here is without audio). But I think there is a danger in thinking that because a brand has a lot of exposure in the social media that it must be pushing into the passive candidate area and even the ultimate Holy Grail of those who are definately not looking. Our thinking and experience is that few of the genuinely passive / not looking are really to be found / engaged with in the social media sphere – they tend not to be loitering around Linkein / Twitter etc.
BUT…the way to the genuinely passive / not looking is through their friends and contacts who speak to them in the “real world” (coffee / beer / watercooler etc etc). By incentivising / motivating their contacts to think and act proactively you can make significant inroads into the passive / not looking pools.
But does the genuinely passive candidate click on a Starbucks (or any other employer) Twitter jobs account or similar? OK maybe some do, but almost by definition those that do weren’t really “passive candidates” in the first place.
Thanks for the slides – I genuinely enjoyed them.
